| This
historic chapel sits beside a small graveyard. Charlie Silver,
a victim of a famour murder in 1831, is buried in that graveyard--
in three separate graves.
His young wife, Frankie, was hanged for the murder in Morganton in 1833.
This story, along with the legends that grew around it, is one of the best
known pieces of folklore of the region. (Read about it in The Ballad of
Frankie Silver, a novel by Sharyn McCrumb.) The site of
Frankie and Charlie's cabin is only a few hundred yards from the
boundaries of the High Cove property. |
