In order to
develop our site plan, the core group staged a "charrette" (an
intensive design workshop) on site. We set up a studio in the
large garage at the lodge. We were assisted by four New
College students, who spent the summer at High Cove as interns.
Teams were
sent out into the field to record features of the landscape on our
maps. Here Richard Martin and Anne Merrill pin up a sketch
showing the locations of trails.
Tom
Cardinal (right) led the charrette and had primary responsibility
for drawing up the group's ideas (assisted by David Brain).
Much of the
site plan is determined by topography.
One of the advantages of working on
site was that we could walk out on the land to compare our maps and
drawings with what we could see on the ground. The interns
helped by locating proposed roads and open space using measuring
tape and small flags.
